Seminary Adopts New Mission Statement

The statement below, which summarizes the mission of Concordia Seminary, was adopted by the Board of Regents at its October 16-18 meeting after months of formulation, review, and revision.

Mission Statement:
Concordia Seminary serves Church and world by providing theological education and leadership centered in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ for the formulation of pastors, missionaries and leaders in the name of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.

Explaining the purpose of the statement, Pres. John F. Johnson said, “Fundamentally, this formal mission statement answers in a direct and succinct way the question, “Why are we here at this time in our history?'”

“A mission statement does not say everything about an organization’s intended results, but states the range within which all future results will occur,” Johnson said. “Rather than presenting a complete and exhaustive explanation of all aspects of the Seminary’s operation,” he explained, “the statement seeks to summarize the broad parameters of the Seminary’s mission in a short, concise statement.”

Johnson emphasized that the statement will serve as a constant reminder of the purpose of the Seminary for the entire Concordia community.
