Luther Tower

Luther Tower was in the original plans for the Seminary, but it was not completed until 1966. It its base is a small chapel, the Chapel of the Holy Apostles and its crown contains a 49-bell carillon. The carillon is played for special events and a series of concerts is conducted every summer on Tuesday evenings. The bells are dedicated to the memory of all Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod pastors. The largest bell weighs 2 1/2 tons and the smallest weighs 17 pounds.

The left side of the Seminary quadrangle (see photo at right), consists of dormitory rooms and academic offices. The Walther Arch, directly below and to the right of Luther Tower, contains an intricate vaulting and pillar system and assists in supporting Luther Tower. On the south wall of the arch is a stone plaque depicting the original Concordia Seminary, a log cabin building, built in 1839 about 100 miles south of St. Louis. On the north wall of the arch, a plaque is displayed which lists the architect, Day and Klauder of Philadelphia.
