Entry Level Competency Exams (ELCE)

All students admitted to the M.A. in Deaconess Studies Program must demonstrate entry level competence in the following areas:  Old Testament (OT), New Testament (NT), and Christian Doctrine (CD).

You may begin taking the ELCEs anytime on or after May 1st of the year prior to intended enrollment. A passing score is 70% or above. You may attempt each exam no more than three times, but you must wait 21 days before retaking an exam of the same subject. The deadline for passing the OT, NT and CD exams is April 30th of the year of intended enrollment. If you have not passed one or more of the ELCEs by the deadline, you will be automatically pre-registered for the corresponding summer course(s). Please also keep in mind that you are not eligible to take a summer language course unless you have passed OT, NT & CD by the April 30th deadline.

Please note that requirements differ for those students seeking a Graduate School M.A. with Deaconess Certification!

ELCE Study Resources

To help you prepare for the Entry-level Competence Exams, we have prepared detailed study guides in Christian Doctrine and New Testament.  Unfortunately, an Old Testament study guide is not yet available.

A multitude of theological audio and video resources are available to download for FREE at itunes.csl.edu. With respect to ELCE preparation you will find videos of our pre-seminary courses in Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Greek and Christian Doctrine in their entirety.
