“Here is the church. Here is the steeple. Open up the doors and see all the people.” It’s a wonderful rhyme to teach our (grand)children, but it seems every week there’s a new headline telling us of the decline of the church in America. Open the doors of too many churches on a Sunday morning and you’ll see more empty pews than people. Experts can present all sorts of reasons for why this is, and all sorts of solutions. But at the heart of it lies deeper questions:
- What does it mean for the church to be an “inviting community”?
- How can it invite genuine community in its neighborhoods and cities?
- What challenges keep it from being an inviting community in today’s society?
This is more than simple evangelism. This gets at the heart of what happens “where two or three gather in my name.” This year’s LutherHostel will gather together as its own close-knit “inviting community” to talk with Concordia Seminary Professors on the deeper issues of what it means to follow Christ and be church together. The presenters will be talking about topics related to their essays published in the book “Inviting Community”, and participants will receive free copies of the book for their own reading and reflection.
The registration fee for the event is $375 per person and includes all meals (Saturday supper through Tuesday lunch, including all refreshments, as well as the Oktoberfest dinner and a candlelit banquet). Please mail the registration form with the required registration fees. For more information, contact the Office of Continuing Education and parish services at email@example.com or 314-505-7286.
