Concordia Seminary Announces 14th Annual Adult Choir Member Workshop

Concordia Seminary will offer its 14th Annual Schola Cantorum: An Adult Choir Member Workshop, on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006. The workshop will be held in The Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus and the Clara and Spencer Werner Auditorium on the Seminary campus. The Schola Cantorum is open to all choir members, choir directors and ministers of music. The schedule for the day begins with registration at 8:30 a.m., Morning Prayer at 9:00 a.m. and rehearsal sessions at 9:30 a.m. The day concludes at 3:30 p.m. after the Closing Prayer service, which will include some of the music learned that day.

Dr. Christopher Cock, director of choral and vocal activities at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind., will serve as this year’s clinician. Cock is well-known for his roles as both conductor and performer. He has served as director of choirs for Lutheran Summer Music, a national Lutheran high school music camp, for five years. He also is an established solo artist, and has earned a reputation as a “Bach Evangelist.” He has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Florida Orchestra, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Miami Bach Society, the American Sinfonietta, the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Seattle Chamber Singers (with Orchestra Seattle). He also has appeared with the Oregon Bach Festival, and Maestro Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Festival Singers. Recordings of his performances with the Festival Singers include Francis Poulenc: Mass and Motets; Amazing Grace: American Hymns and Spirituals;Songs of Angels and O Magnum Mysterium.

“We hold the Schola Cantorum as a way of serving the church at large,” commented Rev. Henry Gerike, director of choirs at Concordia Seminary. “By attending, choir members and directors will learn and rehearse new choral music that can be used in their own churches. They will also learn better the art of singing. Each of our clinicians provides great insights into singing the praises of our Lord.”

The cost for the Schola Cantorum is $100 per congregation ($115 after Jan. 6), and $85 for congregations with less than 200 members ($100 after Jan. 6). For that fee, a choir can send as many members as it desires. Lunch and the choral music are not included in the fee.
