Rev. Dr. George S. Robbert, a professor of historical theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, from 1975 until his retirement in 1995, died from complications of diabetes on August 1 in St. Louis. He was 81 years old.
The funeral service will take place Saturday, August 5, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 12345 Manchester Road, Des Peres, Mo. Visitation will take place Friday, August 4, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Schrader Funeral Home, 14960 Manchester Road, Des Peres, Mo. Visitation is also available prior to the funeral service, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Robbert was born January 24, 1925, in Dallas, Texas, to John F. and Clara Momberger Robbert. He received the B.A. (1946), M.Div. (1948) and S.T.M. (1949) degrees from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis; the M.A. degree from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio (1952); and the Ph.D. degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. (1964).
Robbert served as pastor of Worthington Lutheran Church (now Gethsemane), Worthington, Ohio (1954-1956); assistant to the executive director of the Center for Reformation Research, St. Louis, Mo. (1957-1962); and assistant pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lubbock, Texas (1962-1975). In 1975, Robbert joined the Concordia Seminary faculty as associate professor of historical theology. He became full professor in 1985 and professor emeritus in 1995. He continued to teach part-time at the Seminary until 2002. He also taught as a guest professor at Eden Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., from 1985 to 1986.
Robbert is survived by his wife, Louise, his son, George Harold Robbert, his cousin, George Stiegler, his niece, Alison Bloomfield, and cousins in Mississippi and Louisiana.
