Natural burial practices and how they relate to the Christian faith will be the focus of “From Baptism to Burial, From Perishable to Imperishable: The Practices of Natural (Green) Burial,” a workshop set for Aug. 8-10 on the Concordia Seminary, St. Louis [1] campus.
The workshop will be presented by Dr. Kent Burreson [2], the Louis A. Fincke and Anne B. Shine Professor of Systematic Theology and dean of the chapel, and Dr. Beth Hoeltke, library public services administrator and special assistant to the Seminary’s Graduate School. In their presentation, they will address modern funeral practices that are inconsistent with Lutheran theological confession and teaching.
”Death is the completion of Baptism, as taught by Martin Luther,” said Burreson. “This workshop will refocus the funeral narrative and its practices on the death and resurrection of Christ and the life of the dead in Him.”
“If you are interested in exploring burial from a more theological and environmentally sound perspective, this workshop may be for you,” Hoeltke added. “We will consider the practices associated with the moment of Christians’ death through their burial and all the intricate facets in between.”
The workshop will be held in Sieck Hall 204 on the Seminary’s campus. Registration can be completed online [3] by July 29. The cost for the workshop is $140, which includes CEU credits.
Workshops must have a minimum number of participants in order to be held. The workshop will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, and conclude at noon Wednesday, Aug. 10.
