Registration is now open for Concordia Seminary’s [1] Winter Lay Bible Institute Feb. 10 [2], which will explore the contribution of Africa to the life and doctrine of early Christianity.
Dr. Joel Elowsky [3], professor of historical theology and director for the Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts, will lead the one-day workshop, “Early African Christianity.” The workshop begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m. in Sieck Hall 202 on campus.
Africa’s influence on the life and doctrine of early Christianity often goes unnoticed among African and Western Christians. Africans are often told by Muslims and others that Christianity is the “white man’s religion.” This session of the Winter Lay Bible Institute will explore what Christianity looked like in Africa in the early centuries. It also will explore Africa’s intellectual contributions to the early Christian faith and life as it is found in the Scriptures and from the early church fathers.
Now is a great time to explore African Christianity especially considering the fact that there are more than half a billion Christians in Africa — and many times more Lutherans in Africa than in North America.
