The downloadable resource is designed to aid pastors in their preparations for Lenten midweek services. Professor Emeritus Dr. Jeffrey Gibbs [2] authored the materials.
“Dr. Gibbs has a deep firsthand understanding of the preaching role of the parish pastor,” said Melanie Appelbaum, managing editor of Seminary Publications. “He presents it beautifully in the sermons he wrote for our 11th Lenten sermon series.”
While geared for Lenten midweek services, the series also can be used for Sunday worship during Lent.
“In preparing these nine sermons, I tried to let the voice of Luke the Evangelist have its way as thoroughly as I could,” Gibbs said. “Since the three-year lectionary is focusing on Luke, the series offers an extended experience of pondering the Third Evangelist’s inspired presentation of Jesus’ passion and resurrection. Each sermon is expository, paying close attention to the particularities of the texts in Luke in sequence.”
The series includes nine full sermons that can be used or adapted for Ash Wednesday, five midweek services, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Liturgical suggestions also are included.
