Registration [1] is open for the fifth annual Prevallet Hymn Writing Workshop [2], set for Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, on the campus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Aspiring and published hymn writers and translators and Concordia Seminary students are encouraged to attend. Coaching with the presenters and other local hymn writers for those interested will be available in the afternoon.
The registration fee is $15 and includes a copy of “The Anatomy of Hymnody” by Austin C. Lovelace, which will be provided to each participant at the event. Note: Registration is free for Concordia Seminary students and spouses. The deadline to register is Feb. 24, 2026.
This year’s presenters will be:
- Dr. Lisa M. Clark [3], senior editor of Curriculum Resources at Concordia Publishing House (CPH). Clark has written hundreds of hymns, many of which have been published at CPH in “One and All Rejoice,” choral anthems and digital resources. Clark recently completed her doctoral dissertation on hymnody through the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom.
- Katie Schuermann [4], a widely published author and storyteller with several volumes of fiction to her credit. Schuermann studied vocal pedagogy and literature at Greenville University, Greenville, Ill., before earning graduate degrees in both choral conducting and music history from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, Kansas City, Mo.
- Dr. Jon D. Vieker [5], associate professor of Practical Theology and Dean of Chapel at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Vieker was integrally involved in the research, development, editing and production of “Lutheran Service Book” and its core companion volumes. Vieker currently teaches worship and hymnology and has adjudicated several hymn competitions over the years.
“We are honored this year to learn from two women who are established Lutheran hymn writers and authors,” said Vieker. “We will also be featuring their hymns March 1 during a 4 p.m. hymn festival [6] in the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus, under the leadership of Dr. Sam Eatherton [7] and the various choirs of Concordia Seminary. The community is invited to this free hymn festival!”
The workshop will be held in the lower level of the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis, MO 63105.
