DESCRIPTION:De-coding the Apocalypse: Study of the Book of Revelation\nThe title of the last book of the Bible is translated as “Revelation\,” but its original title was “Apocalypse.” This word literally means “the unveiling.” The purpose of this book of the Bible is to unveil the purposes of God in human history. For many people\, however\, it remains veiled — an obscure\, mysterious and confusing book. The reason many people do not understand the Apocalypse is because it is written in coded language that can only be interpreted by decoding its symbolism. This study will look at the most significant coded symbols of the book and the keys to their interpretation. It will provide a broad sweep of the major themes and message of Revelation as to better understand this book of the Bible. This “unveiling” will enable you to see Christ\, His church and history (past\, present\, and future) in a whole new light. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Peter\nProfessor of Practical Theology; Dean of Faculty; Alumni Relations Adviser\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Peter currently serves as chairman of the Department of Practical Theology and dean of faculty at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. DESCRIPTION:The Present God: Exploring a Major Biblical Theme\nFor many Christians\, the theological value of the Old Testament is limited to messianic prophecies and the comforting assurances of the Psalms. Such a perspective runs the risk of impoverishing our teaching and preaching by failing to recognize the foundational role of the Old Testament for the Christian faith and the rich variety of ways in which its theology is communicated. In this presentation Dr. David Adams will explore one major theological motif\, the presence of God\, and show how it shapes the faith of the Old Testament and the fulfillment of that faith in the person and ministry Jesus Christ in the New Testament. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Adams\nProfessor of Exegetical Theology; W.G. Ray and Louis J. Rechtzigel Professor of Biblical Studies\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Adams joined the faculty of Concordia Seminary in 2000.  During the past 20 years\, he has brought with him to the classroom wide-ranging interests from philosophy to archaeology.  With respect to the latter\, he wrote the study notes for the Psalms and Old Testament Wisdom Literature in the ESV Archaeology Study Bible (Crossway\, 2018) and was centrally involved in the archaeological dig at Khirbet Qeiyafa from which an inscription was unearthed that provides historical evidence for the existence of King David and the united monarchy in 2007. Of course\, he is best known for his work on the Old Testament and has been devoting a much of his time to thinking through a Lutheran theology of the Old Testament with a special focus the presence of God. DESCRIPTION:NEW\n\n\nListening to C.S. Lewis\n\n\n\n\nC.S. Lewis continues to be one of the most important modern authors among English-speaking Christians. His fiction has delighted children and adults alike\, and his nonfiction has encouraged and challenged the Christian as well as the skeptic. This workshop will look at the thought and writings of C.S. Lewis especially as it intersects with themes important for Lutherans — e.g. theology of the cross\, faith\, science and reason\, and the role of beauty for belief and ethics.  There is no pre-requisite reading for this workshop\, but if one wishes\, recommended readings include The Weight of Glory\, The Problem of Pain\, The Four Loves and Till We Have Faces. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Erik Herrmann\nProfessor of Historical Theology; Dean of Theological Research and Publication; Director of the Center for Reformation Research; and Director of Concordia Theology\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Erik Herrmann is emerging as one of the leading Luther scholars in the world as evidenced by an invitation extended to him to give a plenary paper at the International Luther Congress. DESCRIPTION:NEW\n\n\nConfident and Curious: A Wittenberg Guide to Living in a Scientific Age\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop builds upon and expands the “Great Evangelical Debate” offered in the past couple years by Dr. Charles Arand. This workshop will pick up on some of those themes by first asking\, “What are the theological questions/problems raised by the scientific findings and developments of our day?” We will do this by not only considering what is being reported in scientific journals\, but by also considering the theological/existential questions raised by movies such as Ad Astra. Second\, we will ask “What is a good Lutheran approach for navigating the scientific findings and developments of our day and addressing the theological questions they raise?” This will be done in part by considering the distinction of faith and reason as a framework for theology and science and in part by considering the Wittenberg theologians and astronomers as a case study in their response to Copernicus. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Charles Arand \nProfessor of Systematic Theology; Director of the Center for the Care of Creation; and Eugene E. and Nell S. Fincke Graduate Professor of Theology\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Charles Arand has published several books and more than 50 articles on topics related to the Lutheran Confessions (with an emphasis on the catechisms) and the theology of creation. Arand served as the primary drafter for The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod Commission on Theology and Church Relations document Together with All Creatures: Caring for God’s Living Earth (Concordia Publishing House). Since then\, he has written numerous articles\, given public lectures at several Concordia University System schools\, made presentations to numerous pastors’ conferences and conducted many congregational workshops on the topic. DESCRIPTION:NEW\n\n\nLuther’s Soul Care Theology for the 21st Century\n\n\n\n\nMany Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod pastors and other church leaders realize that much of what passes for Christian counseling is based in the Law and not the Gospel of Christ. C.F.W. Walther said that properly dividing Law and Gospel in “private ministrations” is more difficult than in preaching and teaching. How can Lutheran pastors and other counselors better learn to properly distinguish Law and Gospel in counseling situations — and apply the Gospel as antidote where needed? How can Lutheran pastors better equip the non-Lutheran Christian counselors they refer parishioners to with these critically important concepts? When should a Lutheran pastor refer a parishioner to a mental health specialist\, perhaps even a non-Christian one\, when the expertise needed falls into the “left hand kingdom”? Voelz\, the Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury Professor of New Testament Theology\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\, for the seventh annual Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury Lecture in New Testament Theology. \nDoing Biblical Interpretation the Concordia St. Louis Way\nConcordia Seminary\, St. Louis\, is a confessional Lutheran Seminary whose exegetes practice a conservative method of biblical interpretation that is both textual and historical\, often called the historical-grammatical method. But there are various versions or iterations of this method\, i.e.\, various points of emphasis or various elements of focus. Concordia Seminary exegetes have a specific approach to biblical interpretation\, their own version of the historical-grammatical method\, as it were\, especially in the last 40-50 years. This lecture will take a close look at the features of this “St. Louis Seminary” approach.

DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Spirit\nDr. Leopoldo A. Sánchez M.’s recent work Sculptor Spirit: Models of Sanctification from Spirit Christology (IVP Academic\, 2019) offers a constructive narrative approach to the theology of sanctification through a wide-ranging biblical\, historical\, systematic and practical account of life in the Spirit. By reading and discussing the book with the author and reflecting on Christian ministry and mission in light of the book’s themes\, participants will have an opportunity to pursue deep\, imaginative ways of thinking about the sanctified life\, particularly in a North American context. Special attention will be given to how Scripture\, early church fathers\, Martin Luther and selected contemporary theologians use compelling images to help us learn\, discern and communicate what the sanctified life looks like. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Leopoldo A. Sánchez M.\nProfessor of Systematic Theology; Director of the Center for Hispanic Studies; and the Werner R.H. Krause and Elizabeth Ringger Krause Professor of Hispanic Ministries at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Leopoldo A. Sánchez M. is one of the few scholars in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod who has devoted his teaching and writing career to studying and expounding on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit — important work in a time when Pentecostalism or Neo-Pentecostalism is growing rapidly. In good Lutheran fashion\, he focuses on the relationship of the Holy Spirit to Jesus Christ\, both in terms of the Spirit’s work in the ministry of Jesus and the way in which Jesus now carries out his work through the Holy Spirit. DESCRIPTION:The Present God: Exploring a Major Biblical Theme\nFor many Christians\, the theological value of the Old Testament is limited to messianic prophecies and the comforting assurances of the Psalms. Such a perspective runs the risk of impoverishing our teaching and preaching by failing to recognize the foundational role of the Old Testament for the Christian faith and the rich variety of ways in which its theology is communicated. In this presentation\, Dr. David Adams will explore one major theological motif\, the presence of God\, and show how it shapes the faith in the Old Testament and the fulfillment of that faith in the person and ministry of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Adams\nProfessor of Exegetical Theology and the W.G. Ray and Louis J. Rechtzigel Professor of Biblical Studies at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Adams joined the faculty of Concordia Seminary in 2000. During the past 23 years\, he has brought to the classroom wide-ranging interests from philosophy to archaeology. He wrote the study notes for the Psalms and Old Testament wisdom literature in the ESV Archaeology Study Bible (Crossway\, 2018) and was centrally involved in the 2007 archaeological dig at Khirbet Qeiyafa from which an inscription was unearthed that provides historical evidence for the existence of King David and the united monarchy. He is best known for his work on the Old Testament and has been devoting much of his time to thinking through a Lutheran theology of the Old Testament with a special focus on the presence of God. DESCRIPTION:NEW! The Bible We Read in Church\nChristian denominations using a lectionary tend to read the Bible more extensively in church than most denominations that do not use a lectionary. As we use the Three-Year Lectionary Series\, what exactly are we reading in church each year? What will never be read? What specifically are we reading this year? How do the lessons for each Sunday “talk to each other” or illustrate the principle of “Scripture interpreting Scripture?” The focus of this lectionary in 2023 will be the post-Pentecost season of Series A. This workshop is meant for lay leaders and pastors. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Vilson Scholz\nVisiting Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Vilson Scholz is a visiting professor in Exegetical Theology from São Leopoldo\, RS\, Brazil. Scholz has served for 20 years as a translation consultant for United Bible Societies as well as a professor in Brazil for 36 years.
