Rather\, the research—case studies at four congregations with robust catechumenal practices—points to congregational transformation that draws newcomers and long-time members into an apprenticeship of the way and life of Jesus Christ and that fosters a missional identity for the whole congregation. \n	Conceived more as a visioning lab than workshop\, Dr. Kent Burreson will offer background material on adult faith formation\, facilitate small group studies and discussions\, lead participants through experiential learning on ritual\, and moderate structured time designed for participants to formulate a plan for introducing an adult faith formation process in their congregations. Pastors from our research congregations will lead short sessions via Zoom to share their wisdom on various topics related to an adult catechumenate. \n	In the end\, faith formation is not a program\, not even a set of processes or practices\, but a way of life. DESCRIPTION:Principles of Biblical Interpretation for the Parish\nDr. James Voelz is currently working on a book designed to teach hermeneutics to interested laypeople in a parish setting. DESCRIPTION:Sharpening the Sword of the Spirit\nIn this workshop\, pastors will reflect on the art of preaching and learn specific techniques for continued growth in proclaiming God’s Word. Beginning with an overview of the theology of preaching\, the sessions will identify ways to evaluate one’s preaching\, clarify one’s Law and Gospel proclamation and integrate current homiletical theory into the practice of preaching. Participants will submit one sermon to the instructor for use in collegial discussion and learning. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Schmitt\nProfessor of Practical Theology; Chairman of the Department of Practical Theology; and the Gregg H. Benidt Memorial Professor of Homiletics and Literature at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Schmitt is one of our church’s brightest thinkers in the area of homiletics and devotional studies today. His ability to engage the intersections of faith and culture (especially literary culture and more recently\, the visual arts) is extremely helpful for church leaders. DESCRIPTION:Decoding the Apocalypse: Study of the Book of Revelation\nThe title of the last book of the Bible is translated as “Revelation\,” but its original title was “Apocalypse.” This word literally means “the unveiling.” The purpose of this book of the Bible is to unveil the purposes of God in human history. For many people\, however\, it remains veiled — an obscure\, mysterious and confusing book. A reason many people do not understand the Apocalypse is that it is written in coded language that can only be interpreted by decoding its symbolism. This study will look at the most significant coded symbols of the book and the keys to their interpretation\, providing a broad sweep of the major themes and message of Revelation so participants can better understand this book of the Bible. DESCRIPTION:This workshop was originally scheduled for July 10-12\, 2023\, but has been rescheduled to Jan. 22-24\, 2024. \nMaking Christian Counseling More Christ Centered\nMany pastors and church leaders of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod realize that much of what passes for Christian counseling is based in the Law and not the Gospel of Christ. Dr. C.F.W. Walther said that properly dividing Law and Gospel in “private ministrations” is more difficult than in preaching and teaching. How can Lutheran pastors and other counselors better learn to properly distinguish Law and Gospel in counseling situations — and apply the Gospel as an antidote where needed? How can Lutheran pastors better equip the non-Lutheran Christian counselors they refer parishioners to with these critically important concepts? When should a Lutheran pastor refer a parishioner to a mental health specialist\, perhaps even a non-Christian one\, when the expertise needed falls into the “left-hand kingdom”? DESCRIPTION:Poetry\, Prophecy\, Songs\, Prayers: Exploring the Mystery and Beauty of the Psalms\nThe book Psalms is filled with some of the most beautiful and powerful poetry ever written. The psalms are complex on many different levels. For us to appreciate them\, we must read each one slowly and carefully. In this workshop\, we take the time to do just that. We read. And while we read we talk\, and we reflect together on the truths that the psalms offer\, the challenges that they raise and the experiences that they bring. This workshop will offer delightful conversations that center around this central book of the Scriptures. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Timothy Saleska\nProfessor of Exegetical Theology; Dean of Ministerial Formation; and the Gustav and Sophie Butterbach Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Timothy Saleska is professor of Exegetical Theology and dean of Ministerial Formation at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He is writing the Concordia Publishing House (CPH) commentary on Psalms. His devotional reading of the psalms\, and drawing upon them for spiritual strength\, have been incredibly well-received. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Landgraf in Salina\, KS
DESCRIPTION:The Beginnings of Genesis and the Genesis of Beginnings\nThe book of Genesis is\, quite literally\, foundational for the rest of the Scriptures. Although the text is incredibly ancient\, through the words of the text\, our Lord still speaks to us today. The not-as-ancient division of the text into chapters and verses may cause the reader or listener to overlook a part of the larger-scale significance and message. A part of the beginning of the biblical book sometimes lays out or\, more figuratively\, “begets” the upcoming structure of the rest of the book in an attempt to prepare the reader or listener as to what lies ahead. Often\, the layout of the tabernacle/temple serves as a memorable progression. During this workshop\, examples of this structure of an initial layout will be given from both Testaments and various types of writing. Participants in this workshop may have the opportunity to look at possible literary beginnings in any biblical books they would like to study. \n\n\n\n\nRev. Paul Landgraf\nPastor\, Pilgrim Lutheran Church/Saint John Lutheran Church\, Chamois/Drake\, Mo.\nRev. Paul Landgraf has served the church in a variety of contexts\, from Queens\, N.Y.\, on a 1988-89 vicarage under Dr. Larry Vogel\, to rural Missouri\, since 2012\, at two congregations in the small towns of Drake and Freedom\, where the speed limit in both is 50 mph. He received a Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.\, 1998)\, and his thesis included an analysis of Martin Luther’s translation of his favorite Psalm 118. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.\, 2012) by the exam route with an exegetical major. DESCRIPTION:That’ll Preach\nDuring this workshop\, countercultural topics from 1 Peter will be discussed and studied. These topics can contribute to thoughtful sermons\, Bible class studies and a presence in the community that is noticeably different. \n\n\n\n\nPresident Emeritus Dr. Dale A. Meyer\nPresident Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Dale Meyer is perhaps best known as the former speaker of The Lutheran Hour and also president emeritus of Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. During those times\, he acquired a reputation as one of the best preachers and teachers within The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Meyer may be less known for his work as a researcher and scholar of the New Testament. However\, he is eminently qualified\, having received a Ph.D. in classics from Washington University and through his research over the past decade in preparation for writing the commentary on 1 Peter as part of the Concordia Commentary Series from Concordia Publishing House (CPH).
