SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Saleska in Valparaiso\, IN
DESCRIPTION:Poetry\, Prophecy\, Songs\, Prayers: Exploring the Mystery and Beauty of the Psalms\nThe book Psalms is filled with some of the most beautiful and powerful poetry ever written. The psalms are complex on many different levels. For us to appreciate them\, we must read each one slowly and carefully. In this workshop\, we take the time to do just that. We read. And while we read we talk\, and we reflect together on the truths that the psalms offer\, the challenges that they raise and the experiences that they bring. This workshop will offer delightful conversations that center around this central book of the Scriptures. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Timothy Saleska\nProfessor of Exegetical Theology; Dean of Ministerial Formation; and the Gustav and Sophie Butterbach Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Timothy Saleska is professor of Exegetical Theology and dean of Ministerial Formation at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Landgraf in Salina\, KS
DESCRIPTION:The Beginnings of Genesis and the Genesis of Beginnings\nThe book of Genesis is\, quite literally\, foundational for the rest of the Scriptures. Although the text is incredibly ancient\, through the words of the text\, our Lord still speaks to us today. The not-as-ancient division of the text into chapters and verses may cause the reader or listener to overlook a part of the larger-scale significance and message. A part of the beginning of the biblical book sometimes lays out or\, more figuratively\, “begets” the upcoming structure of the rest of the book in an attempt to prepare the reader or listener as to what lies ahead. Often\, the layout of the tabernacle/temple serves as a memorable progression. During this workshop\, examples of this structure of an initial layout will be given from both Testaments and various types of writing. Participants in this workshop may have the opportunity to look at possible literary beginnings in any biblical books they would like to study. \n\n\n\n\nRev. Paul Landgraf\nPastor\, Pilgrim Lutheran Church/Saint John Lutheran Church\, Chamois/Drake\, Mo.\nRev. Paul Landgraf has served the church in a variety of contexts\, from Queens\, N.Y.\, on a 1988-89 vicarage under Dr. Larry Vogel\, to rural Missouri\, since 2012\, at two congregations in the small towns of Drake and Freedom\, where the speed limit in both is 50 mph. He received a Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.\, 1998)\, and his thesis included an analysis of Martin Luther’s translation of his favorite Psalm 118. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.\, 2012) by the exam route with an exegetical major. He currently lives in Eureka\, Mo.\, close enough to frequent the Seminary’s Hasse Library to work on a book that focuses on a Gospel-based structure of the Scriptures. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 3\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 4\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 5\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: May 20\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Meyer in Monterey\, CA
DESCRIPTION:That’ll Preach\nDuring this workshop\, countercultural topics from 1 Peter will be discussed and studied. These topics can contribute to thoughtful sermons\, Bible class studies and a presence in the community that is noticeably different. \n\n\n\n\nPresident Emeritus Dr. Dale A. Meyer\nPresident Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Dale Meyer is perhaps best known as the former speaker of The Lutheran Hour and also president emeritus of Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. During those times\, he acquired a reputation as one of the best preachers and teachers within The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Meyer may be less known for his work as a researcher and scholar of the New Testament. However\, he is eminently qualified\, having received a Ph.D. in classics from Washington University and through his research over the past decade in preparation for writing the commentary on 1 Peter as part of the Concordia Commentary Series from Concordia Publishing House (CPH). This workshop will bring together his research and his engagement with the political culture as a result of the various positions in which he has served. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nThursday\, June 6\n1-5:30 p.m.\n\n\nFriday\, June 7\n9-4 p.m.\n\n\nSaturday\, June 8\n9 a.m.-1 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: May 23\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Filipek in Mentor\, OH
DESCRIPTION:Faith Formation in a Nominally and Post-Christian World\nWhen the church speaks of “Christian formation\,” we tend to speak of a classroom setting: Sunday school\, Confirmation class\, adult instruction and Bible study. Such a perspective runs the risk of treating the Christian faith as primarily intellectual. When that happens\, the church can easily be equated with a K-12 school. Many have a mindset of\, “When I have learned everything I need to know\, then I can be done with church. Like school\, I can graduate\, move on and never return.” But the Christian faith is not something we simply learn\, regurgitate\, graduate and move on from. In this workshop\, participants will explore how narrative catechesis can be used to cultivate a love of the one true God and a desire to dwell with Him here in time: weekly in the Divine Service and daily in our respective vocations and in eternity where we “appear with Him in glory” and dwell with Him forever. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Adam Filipek\nGuest Instructor at Concordia Seminary and Adjunct Professor at Concordia University\, Saint Paul\, Minn.\nDr. Adam Filipek has served as pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidgerwood\, N.D.\, since October 2016. He also serves as an online guest instructor at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\, as well as an adjunct professor of practical theology at Concordia University\, Saint Paul\, Minn. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Nafzger in Tonawanda\, NY
DESCRIPTION:The Communal Shape of the Christian Life: Preaching From\, In and Toward Community in an Age of Individualism\nThere is no such thing as an individual Christian if we take seriously one Baptism by one Spirit into one body (Eph. 4:4-6). Indeed\, to believe in Jesus is to belong to the community of believers that includes all Christians of all times and places — including specific congregational members. But therein lies the problem. Many believers find themselves detached\, disconnected and alone — even if they attend worship regularly. This is a cultural problem\, too. Harvard Magazine recently addressed the more problematic “The Loneliness Pandemic” (2021)\, and The National Academy of the Sciences has begun measuring health based on a new “Social Frailty Index” (2023). These secular authorities are noticing what we\, in the church\, recognize to be a theological problem. As Concordia Seminary Professor of Systematic Theology Dr. Charles Arand put it\, we Lutherans are often “ecclesiologically challenged” (Concordia Journal\, 2008). But Lutherans also have the theological and biblical resources to rediscover our communal identity and help Christians grow closer together in faith and life. Central to this task is our preaching. In this workshop\, we will: \n\nConsider the causes\, both philosophical and practical\, of the rampant individualism infecting our culture and church.\nTake a close look at how preaching has unintentionally contributed to the problem.\nDiscuss specific ways in which our teaching and preaching can foster a more communal life in the congregation.\n\nThis workshop includes an opportunity for preachers to review and reimagine some of their recent sermons to see how they could more intentionally build community in their congregations. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Peter Nafzger\nAssociate Professor of Practical Theology and Director of Student Life at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Peter Nafzger is associate professor of Practical Theology and director of student life at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He has been a faculty member since 2016. He is a gifted theologian and speaker who manifests what is best about The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Nafzger joined the faculty here after serving as a pastor for nine years in Minnesota. While in Minnesota\, he served as a leader\, and continues to do so in planning of the LCMS Youth Gathering. His dissertation\, and hence his expertise\, centers on a Lutheran approach and the use of Scripture over and against the fundamentalist approaches that often dominate American Christianity. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 17\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 18\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 19\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: June 3\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Elowsky in Bourbonnais\, IL
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to the Early Church\nMany people are unfamiliar with the early church and its contributions to what we believe\, teach and confess today. Lutherans and Protestants more generally assume that after the time of the apostles\, errors crept into church theology and teaching\, which only got worse as the years passed. Most Christians will happily skip over the early church and jump to the Reformation when the pure Gospel was rediscovered\, assuming that previous ages were in error. This neglects the fact that the Holy Spirit has a history throughout the life of His church. This also has often led the present-day church not only to repeat the errors against which the early church successfully fought but also to neglect the roots of existence\, which can help the church navigate our postmodern world. This workshop will help introduce the participants to some of the key figures and issues prevalent in the early church and will explore their relevance to the church of the 21st century. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Joel Elowsky\nProfessor of Historical Theology; Dean of Advanced Studies; Director of the Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts; Coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs; and the Frank and Valerie Fuerst Professor of Historical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Joel Elowsky is professor of Historical Theology\, dean of Advanced Studies and coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He also is the director of the Seminary’s Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts and is a researcher for the Center for Early African Christianity at the Oden House in New Haven\, Conn. He has been a faculty member at Concordia Seminary since 2014. Elowsky has cultivated relationships across the Christian spectrum as a result of his years of work with Dr. Thomas Oden and the Early Christian Commentary Series. In that work he has done great service in helping the church today appropriate its ancient heritage that served as a foundation for Reformation theology. His work dovetails nicely with the cutting-edge research of the history of exegesis of others at the Seminary. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 24\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 25\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 26\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: June 10\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Peter in York\, NE
DESCRIPTION:Decoding the Apocalypse: Study of the Book of Revelation\nThe title of the last book of the Bible is translated as “Revelation\,” but its original title was “Apocalypse.” This word literally means “the unveiling.” The purpose of this book of the Bible is to unveil the purposes of God in human history. For many people\, however\, it remains veiled — an obscure\, mysterious and confusing book. A reason many people do not understand the Apocalypse is that it is written in coded language that can only be interpreted by decoding its symbolism. This study will look at the most significant coded symbols of the book and the keys to their interpretation\, providing a broad sweep of the major themes and message of Revelation so participants can better understand this book of the Bible. This “unveiling” will enable you to see Christ\, His church and history (past\, present and future) in a whole new light. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Peter\nProfessor of Practical Theology\, Dean of Faculty and Alumni Relations Adviser at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Peter has led well-received lay studies on the book of Revelation and also has recently published a book on leading mid-sized congregations\, Maximizing the Midsize Church: Effective for Leadership for Fruitful Mission and Ministry (CPH). Those who know him recognize that he brings a solid theological understanding of the church to the topic as well as an openness to how we live out our Lutheran ecclesiology in the world today. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, July 8\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, July 9\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, July 10\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: June 24\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. DESCRIPTION:What Can Eighth Century B.C. Prophets Teach the 21st Century?\nSeparated by nearly three millennia and significant cultural differences\, the great prophets of the eighth century B.C. — Isaiah\, Micah\, Amos\, Hosea and Jonah — can seem a world apart. Yet the Spirit remains active in the word they delivered that we would be strengthened in the faith. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Golden in Springfield\, MO
DESCRIPTION:It Stands Written: The New Testament Appropriation of the Old Testament\nChrist and the apostles regularly ground their teaching upon the Word of the Lord given through Moses and the prophets. While the fulfillment of prophecy is regularly cited in the New Testament\, that is not the only dynamic. At times\, the language of Old Testament texts is significantly transformed in New Testament texts. Then\, there are allusions and echoes of Old Testament texts within the New Testament that stop short of direction quotation yet build on the prior text. During this workshop\, participants will explore the various dynamics of the New Testament’s use of the Old Testament\, consider the Christological significance of those dynamics and reflect on how the interpretive practice can reflect those dynamics. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Golden\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology and Dean of Theological Research and Publication at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Kevin Golden is associate professor of Exegetical Theology and dean of Theological Research and Publication at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. DESCRIPTION:The Book of Psalms and the Christ\nDr. Adam Hensley\nOur Lord often quoted the Psalms and said that they testify about Him (Luke 24:27; John 5:39). In doing so\, Jesus confirmed the psalter’s prophetic witness about Himself as Israel’s coming Messiah. In this workshop we will consider how the psalter’s arrangement contributes to the Psalms’ rich picture of the Christ as Triumphant King\, Royal Son\, Suffering Servant\, Priestly Mediator and Leader of Praise to the Father. We also will explore some of the manifold ways we hear the Christ speaking in the Psalms as He identifies with sinners\, announces God’s grace to them\, and enjoins them to join Him in prayer\, praise and thanksgiving to God. \nRegister Learn More\n

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Marrs in Dublin\, OH
DESCRIPTION:Luther’s Soul Care Theology for the 21st Century\nMany LCMS pastors and church leaders realize that much of what passes for Christian counseling is based on the Law\, not the Gospel of Christ. Dr. C.F.W. Walther\, the Concordia Seminary’s first president\, said that properly dividing Law and Gospel in “private ministrations” is more difficult than in preaching and teaching. How can Lutheran pastors and other counselors better learn to properly distinguish Law and Gospel in counseling situations — and apply the Gospel as an antidote where needed? How can Lutheran pastors better equip the non-Lutheran Christian counselors they refer parishioners to with these critically important concepts? When should a Lutheran pastor refer a parishioner to a mental health specialist\, perhaps even a non-Christian one\, when the expertise needed falls into the “left-hand kingdom”? During this workshop\, these and other complicated pastoral care questions will be addressed in hopes that the learners will become more confident and effective in their care of the souls entrusted to them. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Richard Marrs\nSenior Professor of Practical Theology\nDr. Rick Marrs is senior professor of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\, and has been at the forefront of his field when it comes to confronting the assumptions of and approaches of secular counselors. He has worked to bring a Christocentric\, Law-Gospel approach to counseling among evangelicals. He was a professor of psychology and a counselor at St. John’s College in Winfield\, Kan. (1983–86; admissions counselor 1982–83)\, and at Concordia University Chicago\, River Forest\, Ill. (1986–98). He also has done counseling\, clinical and consulting work with Lutheran Child and Family Services; the Baldwin Center for Psychological Services; the Center for Applied Psychology and Forensic Studies; the Kansas State University counseling center; Rapha (a Christian inpatient psychiatric group); Concordia University\, Ann Arbor\, Mich.; Lutheran Special Education Ministries; and various districts of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). He has been licensed as a psychologist since 1996. In 2019\, Marrs published the book Making Christian Counseling More Christ Centered\, which focuses on the relevance of Martin Luther’s soul-care theology in Christian counseling (WestBow Press). \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, Aug. 5\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, Aug. 6\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, Aug. 7\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: July 22\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. DESCRIPTION:Christian Caregiving for People Suffering with Depression and Anxiety\nDr. Stephen Pietsch\nToday mental health struggles affect so many people\, draining their energy and joy for life and undermining their confidence. People rightly look for medical and psychological treatment to help them in such struggles. Yet\, as researchers are recognizing more and more\, a large component of these struggles is spiritual\, and people need spiritual care and healing too. In this workshop we will draw on the long Christian tradition of care and comfort to those in mental distress\, looking into Scripture\, as well as gaining insights from Martin Luther and his pastoral care of those with mental struggles. \nRegister Learn More\n

DESCRIPTION:Christian Politics: Jesus is Lord\nDr. Joel Biermann\nLiving in the intersection between God’s two realms of activity in His world creates unique responsibilities and challenges for those who follow Jesus. Christians sometimes get confused about their political lives in this world and can begin to live at odds with a faithful confession of Christ. It is important\, then\, to consider the responsibility of the church and its people to provide the surrounding world a bold and authentic witness of the reality of the lordship Christ over all of creation. DESCRIPTION:Solum Verbum: What Word Alone Can Do in the Gospel According to John\nDr. Bruce Schuchard\nAnd God spoke. By His word this world was made\, made by Him who is speaking\, whose word is everything. The Gospel of John names Him “the Word” (ὁ λόγος). Jesus\, the incarnate Word of God\, it seems\, is of utmost importance. For\, in its very first verse\, the Gospel states that “In the beginning [!] was the Word\,” (John 1:1 ESV). In this workshop\, we will consider who Jesus is (“the Word”) and what Jesus does. \nRegister Learn more\n
