SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Golden in Apex\, NC
DESCRIPTION:It Stands Written: The New Testament Appropriation of the Old Testament\nChrist and the apostles regularly ground their teaching upon the word of the Lord given through Moses and the prophets. While the fulfillment of prophecy is regularly cited in the New Testament\, that is not the only dynamic. At times\, the language of Old Testament texts is significantly transformed in New Testament texts. Then there are allusions and echoes of Old Testament texts within the New Testament that stop short of direction quotation yet build on the prior text. We will explore the various dynamics of the New Testament’s use of the Old Testament\, consider the Christological significance of those dynamics\, and reflect on how our interpretive practice can reflect those dynamics. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Golden\nDirector of Resident Field Education\, Associate Professor of Exegetical Theology\, and Dean of Theological Research and Publication\nDr. Kevin Golden is known as a caring\, dedicated parish pastor who has distinguished himself as a preacher and teacher. Golden served as the pastor of Village Lutheran Church in Ladue\, Mo.\, prior to joining the faculty of Concordia Seminary in 2021. Golden’s research experience includes Hosea\, biblical usage of the divine name\, Genesis 6-9\, Jonah\, the Book of the Twelve (Minor Prophets) and biblical intertextuality. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, Aug. 11\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, Aug. 12\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, Aug. 13\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: July 28\, 2025\n	Location contact: Rev. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Nafzger in Conover\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Beginning with the (Communal) End in Mind: Confirmation\, Christian Formation and the Life in the Congregation\nMany congregations are dissatisfied with the current state of their Confirmation ministry. They should be. Barna recently reported that 59% of 18–29-year-olds with a Christian background have dropped out of church. Statistics in the LCMS are even worse. A recent study by LCMS Youth Ministry showed that less than two of every 10 children we baptize are still members of LCMS congregations when they graduate from high school. This fits what many congregations already know from local experience: many young people — often confirmed young people — are leaving our congregations. And they aren’t coming back. \nWhat should we do? One response is to take a close and critical look at how we conduct Confirmation ministry in our congregations. This involves asking tough questions about how well we are preparing young people for life in an increasingly post-church culture. Another response is to examine how well we are cultivating a communal life for all our members. \nIn this workshop we will do both. We will take a close look at Confirmation and how we raise up young people. We will also discuss ways in which congregations and pastors might cultivate a more communal conception and practice of the Christian life. Our goal will be to imagine (and work toward) a future for Confirmation and Christian formation that is better equipped to handle today’s challenges\, as well as the challenges that we can’t yet see coming. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Peter Nafzger\nAssociate Professor of Practical Theology\, Director\, Student Life\, Coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs\nDr. Peter Nafzger is a gifted theologian and speaker. He joined the faculty at Concordia Seminary in 2016 after serving as a pastor for nine years in Minnesota. While in Minnesota\, Nafzger served as a leader (and continues to do so) in the planning of our National Youth Gatherings. His dissertation (and hence his expertise) centers on a Lutheran approach and the use of Scripture over and against the fundamentalist approaches that often dominate American Christianity. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nFriday\, Sept. 19\n6-9 p.m.\n\n\nSaturday\, Sept. 20\n8:30 a.m-noon\n\n\n\n12:45-4 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: Sept. 5\, 2025\n	Location contact: Rev.
