SUMMARY:Multiethnic Symposium
DESCRIPTION:United in Praise: Celebrating God’s Love and Faithfulness Across All Nations\nIn Ps. 117:1\, the church is called to praise the Lord — all nations together. The praise of the multiethnic church becomes a powerful witness to the rich tapestry of peoples who together glorify Him. This praise highlights the unity of faith and confession shared by believers from every culture\, grounded in the unwavering love and faithfulness of God. Through expressions of praise in music\, dance and art\, the 2026 Multiethnic Symposium will explore how the church is equipped to bear witness to God’s love and faithfulness across all nations. “Praise the Lord\, all nations!” (Ps. 117:1 ESV).\n

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop: Professor Lane in Rochester\, NY
DESCRIPTION:The Epistle of James and its Importance for the Lutheran Church\nA singular concentration on Luther’s criticism of James as “an epistle of straw” has caused many to overlook the epistle as a source of Luther’s theology. A closer look at Luther’s sermons and writings\, however\, suggests that Luther’s theology was shaped by the Book of James and that Luther’s faithful reading of Scripture led his students and theological heirs to follow his biblical interpretation and to preach this disputed letter fruitfully for the church. \nThis workshop offers a study of the Book of James based on the Lutheran exegetical tradition in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. With attention to the epistle itself\, we will consider why James was important to the Lutheran church in the 16th and 17th centuries\, and why it is still important for us today. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Jason Lane\nAssociate Professor of Historical Theology\, and Director of Research\, Assessment and Academic Programming\nDr. Jason Lane is associate professor of Historical Theology and the director of research\, assessment and academic programming at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. His areas of interest include Martin Luther and the theology of the Lutheran Reformation\, biblical exegesis in the age of the Reformation and Lutheran Orthodoxy\, and the theology of the 19th-century Confessional Revival\, especially the works of Theodor Kliefoh. He is also the author of “Luther’s Epistle of Straw: The Voice of St. James in Reformation Preaching” (De Gruyter\, 2018). \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 1\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 2\n9 a.m.-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 3\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration fee: $160\n	Registration deadline: May 18\, 2026\n	Location contact: John Pingel\n	 \n	Register\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:What Can 8th Century B.C. Prophets Teach the 21st Century?\nSeparated by nearly three millennia and significant cultural differences\, the great prophets of the 8th century B.C. – Isaiah\, Micah\, Amos\, Hosea and Jonah – can seem a world apart. Yet the Spirit remains active in their message so that we would be strengthened in the faith. We will consider the 8th-century B.C. prophets in their original context\, compare that context to our own and apply the Word of the Lord that they delivered afresh to our own day. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Golden\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology\, Dean of Ministerial Formation\, and Director of Resident Field Education\nDr. Kevin Golden is associate professor of Exegetical Theology\, dean of Ministerial Formation\, and director of Resident Field Education at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop: Professor Prieto in Irvine\, CA
DESCRIPTION:Reaching Out to Our Neighbors with the Gospel of Hope: Engaging and Learning from Our Global South Partners\nChrist commissioned His apostles to be His witnesses “to the ends of the earth\,” calling them to make disciples of all nations by baptizing and teaching (Acts 1:8; Matt. 28:19–20). For centuries\, going abroad has been a central mission endeavor of the Christian church — and The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) continues to faithfully participate in that global mission. However\, shifting immigration patterns have opened new doors for outreach. The U.S. itself has become a mission field\, as many immigrants arrive not only to receive the Gospel\, but also to proclaim it. These brothers and sisters from the Global South bring with them vibrant faith and a passion for sharing Christ. How\, then\, can our LCMS congregations engage in meaningful outreach alongside these mission-minded partners — reaching into the diverse neighborhoods of our own nation with the love and truth of Jesus? \n\n\n\n\nDr. Ely Prieto\nAssociate Professor of Practical Theology\, Associate Dean of Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry\, Director of the Center for Hispanic Studies\, and Lutheran Foundation Professor of Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry\nDr. Ely Prieto is associate professor of Practical Theology\, the Lutheran Foundation Professor of Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry\, associate dean for Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry and director of the Center for Hispanic Studies at Concordia\, Seminary\, St. Louis. A faculty member since 2021\, Dr. Prieto has an extensive academic background teaching in the areas of homilitics\, pastoral theology\, church planning and administration. He was one of the editors of “O Povo de Deus (A Festschrift in Honor of Rev. Dr. Acir Raymann)” and has contributed chapters for a variety of published books\, articles\, book reviews\, homiletical and sermonic studies and sermons. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nTuesday\, June 16\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 17\n9 a.m.-4 p.m.\n\n\nThursday\, June 18\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration fee: $160\n	Registration deadline: June 2\, 2026\n	Location contact: Maddie Gong\n	 \n	Register\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop: Professor Thompson in Baxter\, MN
DESCRIPTION:Family Discipleship: Exploring an Effective Partnership of Home and Congregation\nChristian Smith\, co-author of “Handing Down the Faith\,” wrote\, “All research in the United States today shows clearly that parents are by far the most important factor influencing their children’s religion\, not only as youth but also after they leave home. Not clergy\, religious schools\, youth ministers\, neighborhoods\, Sunday school\, mission trips\, service projects\, summer campus\, peers or the media. Parents.” Yet\, this research also shows that congregations have an important part in teaching the faith\, connecting families in community and inspiring parental “religiousness.” This workshop will explore the subject from several angles — Scripture\, Small Catechism\, current literature/research/practices for application in homes and congregations using a “map for family discipleship” navigated with “new creational wisdom” centered in Christ. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Mart Thompson\nAssociate Professor of Practical Theology\, and Director of Specific Ministry Pastor Program\nDr. W. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop: Professor Fickenscher in York\, NE
DESCRIPTION:And He Spoke Many Things to Them in Parables\nThe parables of Jesus are among the most beloved passages of Scripture yet are notoriously difficult to interpret. What\, exactly\, are these parables? Are they “earthly stories with a heavenly meaning”? How should we read and apply them faithfully as Christians in our lives today? This workshop will first explore what kind of stories parables are. Then\, we will construct a method for reading them that is faithful to their literary form and that all God’s people can use. Finally\, we will apply the method and walk through multiple parables together to see how Jesus uses this literary form to teach us more about who He is and what it means to belong to His kingdom. \n\n\n\n\nDr. James Fickenscher\nAssistant professor of Exegetical Theology\nDr. James Fickenscher is assistant professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop: Professor Hensley in Salina\, KS
DESCRIPTION:The Book of Psalms and the Christ\nOur Lord often quoted the Psalms and said that they testify about Him (Luke 24:27; John 5:39). In doing so\, Jesus confirmed the Psalter’s prophetic witness about Himself as Israel’s coming Messiah. In this workshop\, we will consider how the Psalter’s arrangement contributes to the Psalms’ rich picture of the Christ as Triumphant King\, Royal Son\, Suffering Servant\, Priestly Mediator and Leader of Praise to the Father. We also will explore some of the manifold ways we hear Christ speaking in the Psalms as He identifies with sinners\, announces God’s grace to them and enjoins them to join Him in prayer\, praise and thanksgiving to God. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Adam Hensley\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology\nDr. Adam Hensley is associate professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop: Professor Maxwell in St. Louis\, MO
DESCRIPTION:It’s Greek to Me! A Greek Immersion Workshop\nThis workshop is designed to increase fluency in reading the New Testament in Greek by giving students experience listening to and speaking Koine Greek. It is similar to an “immersion experience” in modern languages. The course assumes that the students have learned Koine Greek at some point\, but their Greek may be rusty. The workshop also is appropriate for those whose Greek is in good shape but who want to get even better at it. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Maxwell\nProfessor of Systematic Theology\, Chairman of the Department of Systematic Theology\, and Louis A. Fincke and Anna B. Shine Professor of Systematic Theology\nDr. David R. Maxwell is the Louis A. Fincke and Anna B. Shine Professor of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. His primary research interest is the early church\, particularly the Christological controversies of the fourth through sixth centuries. He also works in the field of patristic exegesis and recently produced a translation of “Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentary on John” (InterVarsity Press)\, as well as “Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentaries on Romans\, 1-2 Corinthians and Hebrews” (InterVarsity Press). He has delivered a number of presentations on Lutheran identity\, both in the United States and in Indonesia. Additionally\, he has written on the theological symbolism in the organ music of J.S. Bach and has produced organ videos on the topic. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, Aug. 10\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, Aug. 11\n9 a.m.-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, Aug. 12\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration fee: $160\n	Student fee: $75\n	Registration deadline: July 27\, 2026\n	Location contact: Erika Petsch\n	 \n	Register\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n
