DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. James W. Voelz\, the Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury Professor of New Testament Theology\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\, for the seventh annual Dr. Jack Dean Kingsbury Lecture in New Testament Theology. \nDoing Biblical Interpretation the Concordia St. Louis Way\nConcordia Seminary\, St. Louis\, is a confessional Lutheran Seminary whose exegetes practice a conservative method of biblical interpretation that is both textual and historical\, often called the historical-grammatical method. But there are various versions or iterations of this method\, i.e.\, various points of emphasis or various elements of focus. Concordia Seminary exegetes have a specific approach to biblical interpretation\, their own version of the historical-grammatical method\, as it were\, especially in the last 40-50 years. This lecture will take a close look at the features of this “St. Louis Seminary” approach.

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Marrs in Claremont\, NC
DESCRIPTION:NEW\n\n\nLuther’s Soul Care Theology for the 21st Century\n\n\n\n\nMany Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod pastors and other church leaders realize that much of what passes for Christian counseling is based in the Law and not the Gospel of Christ. C.F.W. Walther said that properly dividing Law and Gospel in “private ministrations” is more difficult than in preaching and teaching. How can Lutheran pastors and other counselors better learn to properly distinguish Law and Gospel in counseling situations — and apply the Gospel as antidote where needed? How can Lutheran pastors better equip the non-Lutheran Christian counselors they refer parishioners to with these critically important concepts? When should a Lutheran pastor refer a parishioner to a mental health specialist\, perhaps even a non-Christian one\, when the expertise needed falls into the “left hand kingdom”? These and other complicated pastoral care questions will be addressed in hopes that the learners will become more confident and effective in their care of the souls entrusted to them. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Richard “Rick” Marrs \nProfessor of Practical Theology\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Richard “Rick” Marrs has been in the forefront of his field when it comes to confronting the assumptions of and approaches of secular counselors. He has worked to bring a Christocentric\, Law-Gospel approach to counseling among evangelicals. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, Aug. 15\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, Aug. 16\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, Aug. 17\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $140\n	Registration deadline: Aug. 1\, 2022\n	Location contact: Morgan Lane\n	 \n	Register\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Lessing in Dublin\, OH
DESCRIPTION:Job: Blessed be the Name of the Lord\nMartin Luther asserted that “Job is magnificent and sublime as no book of Scripture.” Others have called Job “the Shakespeare of the Bible.” Yet the early Christian scholar Jerome perhaps put it best when he called the book of Job an “eel\,” since the more one tries to contain it\, the slipperier it becomes! The purpose of this workshop is to learn how to apply Job to our lives\, so that the book becomes less like an eel and more like a loving companion through life’s dark valleys. Bible study and sermonic insights will abound. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Reed Lessing\nProfessor of Theology and Ministry; and Director of the Center for Biblical Studies\, Concordia University\, Saint Paul\, Minn.\nDr. Reed Lessing has served as a seminary professor and parish pastor\, combining both vocations in his presentations and writings. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Arand in Seymour\, IN
DESCRIPTION:NEW\n\n\nConfident and Curious: A Wittenberg Guide to Living in a Scientific Age\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop builds upon and expands the “Great Evangelical Debate” offered in the past couple years by Dr. Charles Arand. This workshop will pick up on some of those themes by first asking\, “What are the theological questions/problems raised by the scientific findings and developments of our day?” We will do this by not only considering what is being reported in scientific journals\, but by also considering the theological/existential questions raised by movies such as Ad Astra. Second\, we will ask “What is a good Lutheran approach for navigating the scientific findings and developments of our day and addressing the theological questions they raise?” This will be done in part by considering the distinction of faith and reason as a framework for theology and science and in part by considering the Wittenberg theologians and astronomers as a case study in their response to Copernicus. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Charles Arand \nProfessor of Systematic Theology; Director of the Center for the Care of Creation; and Eugene E. and Nell S. Fincke Graduate Professor of Theology\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Charles Arand has published several books and more than 50 articles on topics related to the Lutheran Confessions (with an emphasis on the catechisms) and the theology of creation. Arand served as the primary drafter for The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod Commission on Theology and Church Relations document Together with All Creatures: Caring for God’s Living Earth (Concordia Publishing House). Since then\, he has written numerous articles\, given public lectures at several Concordia University System schools\, made presentations to numerous pastors’ conferences and conducted many congregational workshops on the topic. He is currently exploring how the theology of creation informs our care of creation\, and how creation and redemption are intimately united. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, Aug. 1\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, Aug. 2\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, Aug. 3\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $140\n	Registration deadline: July 25\, 2022\n	Location contact: Ralph Blomenberg\n	 \n	Register\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Herrmann in Ottawa\, KS
DESCRIPTION:NEW\n\n\nListening to C.S. Lewis\n\n\n\n\nC.S. Lewis continues to be one of the most important modern authors among English-speaking Christians. His fiction has delighted children and adults alike\, and his nonfiction has encouraged and challenged the Christian as well as the skeptic. This workshop will look at the thought and writings of C.S. Lewis especially as it intersects with themes important for Lutherans — e.g. theology of the cross\, faith\, science and reason\, and the role of beauty for belief and ethics. There is no pre-requisite reading for this workshop\, but if one wishes\, recommended readings include The Weight of Glory\, The Problem of Pain\, The Four Loves and Till We Have Faces. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Erik Herrmann\nProfessor of Historical Theology; Dean of Theological Research and Publication; Director of the Center for Reformation Research; and Director of Concordia Theology\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Erik Herrmann is emerging as one of the leading Luther scholars in the world as evidenced by an invitation extended to him to give a plenary paper at the International Luther Congress. His academic interests in Luther studies are complemented by an equally strong interest in questions related to Lutheran piety and the devotional writings of the late Middle Ages and Reformation especially as they pertain to pastoral care. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 27\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 28\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 29\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $140\n	Registration deadline: June 13\, 2022\n	Location contact: Timothy Roth\n	 \n	Register\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Adams in York\, NE
DESCRIPTION:The Present God: Exploring a Major Biblical Theme\nFor many Christians\, the theological value of the Old Testament is limited to messianic prophecies and the comforting assurances of the Psalms. Such a perspective runs the risk of impoverishing our teaching and preaching by failing to recognize the foundational role of the Old Testament for the Christian faith and the rich variety of ways in which its theology is communicated. In this presentation Dr. David Adams will explore one major theological motif\, the presence of God\, and show how it shapes the faith of the Old Testament and the fulfillment of that faith in the person and ministry Jesus Christ in the New Testament. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Adams\nProfessor of Exegetical Theology; W.G. Ray and Louis J. Rechtzigel Professor of Biblical Studies\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Adams joined the faculty of Concordia Seminary in 2000. During the past 20 years\, he has brought with him to the classroom wide-ranging interests from philosophy to archaeology. With respect to the latter\, he wrote the study notes for the Psalms and Old Testament Wisdom Literature in the ESV Archaeology Study Bible (Crossway\, 2018) and was centrally involved in the archaeological dig at Khirbet Qeiyafa from which an inscription was unearthed that provides historical evidence for the existence of King David and the united monarchy in 2007. Of course\, he is best known for his work on the Old Testament and has been devoting a much of his time to thinking through a Lutheran theology of the Old Testament with a special focus the presence of God. Adams is one of those people who loves to talk theology at the drop of a hat and does so in a way that enables his conversation partner to start thinking in new ways. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nWednesday\, June 15\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nThursday\, June 16\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nFriday\, June 17\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $140\n	Registration deadline: June 1\, 2022\n	Location contact: Mike Neidow\n	 \n	Register\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Peter in Chandler\, AZ
DESCRIPTION:De-coding the Apocalypse: Study of the Book of Revelation\nThe title of the last book of the Bible is translated as “Revelation\,” but its original title was “Apocalypse.” This word literally means “the unveiling.” The purpose of this book of the Bible is to unveil the purposes of God in human history. For many people\, however\, it remains veiled — an obscure\, mysterious and confusing book. The reason many people do not understand the Apocalypse is because it is written in coded language that can only be interpreted by decoding its symbolism. This study will look at the most significant coded symbols of the book and the keys to their interpretation. It will provide a broad sweep of the major themes and message of Revelation as to better understand this book of the Bible. This “unveiling” will enable you to see Christ\, His church and history (past\, present\, and future) in a whole new light. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Peter\nProfessor of Practical Theology; Dean of Faculty; Alumni Relations Adviser\, Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Peter currently serves as chairman of the Department of Practical Theology and dean of faculty at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He has led well-received lay studies on the book of Revelation (hence this workshop!). He also has recently published a book on leading mid-sized congregations\, Maximizing the Midsize Church: Effective for Leadership for Fruitful Mission and Ministry. Those who know him recognize that he brings a solid theological understanding of the church to the topic as well as an openness to how we live out our Lutheran ecclesiology in the world today. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 6\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 7\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 8\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $140\n	Registration deadline: May 23\, 2022\n	Location contact: Mark Hoffmann\n	 \n	Register\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n

SUMMARY:Missional Leadership in the Urban Context
DESCRIPTION:Concordia Seminary is partnering with Concordia University\, Saint Paul\, Minn.\, (CSP) to offer this online continuing education course for pastors\, lay leaders and commissioned church workers\, “Missional Leadership in the Urban Context.” The course assumes a general familiarity with U.S. cities\, interest in reaching people in urban areas with the Gospel\, and some experience serving or ministering in urban areas. The course is taught by Dr. Leopoldo A. Sánchez M.\, professor of Systematic Theology\, director of the Center for Hispanic Studies and the Werner R.H. Krause and Elizabeth Ringger Krause Professor of Hispanic Ministries at Concordia Seminary; Dr. Mark Koschmann\, associate vice president of faith and ministry and chair of the Department of Theology and Ministry at CSP; and Dr. Gerard Bolling\, associate pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Louis\, Mo.\, and assistant professor of leadership and theology at Concordia University Texas\, Austin. \n\n \nCourse format \nThis course features six modules over six weeks\, with video lectures\, optional readings\, recommended assignments and peer discussion activities to enhance the learning experience. The first two modules include a live video conference with students and the instructors; this session will be recorded so students can view it later if they are unable to attend. The next three modules each use 45–60 minutes of prerecorded videos that are divided into digestible segments. The final module includes a live wrap-up video conference that will be recorded. \nThe course is fully online and asynchronous\, meaning it can be completed at any time after the April 20 launch date. The course is especially appropriate for those in urban and metropolitan settings. Pastors can earn one Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit. \nCourse topics \nCities matter. As the city goes\, so goes the entire culture of the arts\, scholarship\, communication\, philosophy and commerce. For Christians today\, the city presents many challenges\, and yet the diversity\, density and prominence of cities means that urban ministry is an essential place for Christians to proclaim the Gospel. Moreover\, the city offers a tremendous opportunity for Christians to love\, serve and welcome people with hospitality\, openness and Christian love. \nThe ministry of the early Christians was remarkably city-centric. When Paul planted churches\, he traveled to the largest city of that region to teach and preach the Gospel. As the churches grew in these urban areas\, more and more people were able to experience the Gospel message as it spread from the urban center to the surrounding countryside. A similar dynamic is taking place in the world today. By proclaiming the Gospel in urban and metropolitan areas\, Christians have an opportunity to once again engage and shape the wider culture and proclaim the Gospel to people from all over the world. \nSession 1: The Gospel for the City \nIn this session\, we will explore the Christian call toward the city. We will discuss how cities matter in our globally connected world and the opportunities this presents for Christian witness\, service and outreach. We also will delve into a Lutheran theology of the city and the role of Lutheran congregations in urban and suburban settings as part of larger metropolitan regions in the United States. \nSession 2: Perspectives from the City \nHow do we envision cities in the United States and the world today? How have cities changed? What do we hope the city will become? In this session\, we will explore these essential questions for developing missional leadership in the urban context. We also will feature first-hand perspectives from the city that examine the socioeconomic\, racial\, ethnic\, political and religious diversity of the city. While many voices in our culture attempt to use diversity to drive people apart\, we will examine how Christians from diverse backgrounds can work together in the unity\, freedom and hope of Jesus Christ to bring renewal to people living in the city. \nSession 3: Historical and Cultural Issues in Urban Studies \nThe last several decades of U.S. history and urban history are vital for understanding the present state of the American city. We will examine the historical\, political and cultural reasons that have led to the development of today’s cities. For instance\, people sometimes assume that African Americans essentially must reside in segregated\, often poorer neighborhoods in U.S. cities. However\, this reality emerged over time\, in large part to economic and political policies. In order to engage in the urban context\, we need to understand the numerous historical factors like redlining\, blockbusting\, restrictive covenants and public-school policies that have created urban neighborhoods of segregation and poverty. \nSession 4: Pursuing Justice in the City \nCries for justice abound in our contemporary context. How should Christians engage with social and political issues\, especially those injustices and inequalities that are experienced poignantly in the city? This session will examine the many competing perspectives of justice touted in our culture. We then will offer a specifically Lutheran\, biblical perspective on justice and consider how this Lutheran\, biblical perspective can address what seem to be intractable issues such as poverty\, homelessness and racism. \nSession 5: Connecting People to the City \nDespite the challenges facing urban areas\, Christians have a tremendous opportunity to serve and witness to people across the city. This session will explore how to best connect with diverse people across the metropolitan region. We will explore how congregations can help support each other as a network of supportive\, empathetic\, Christ-centered churches. We will highlight the value of one-on-one personal visits\, asset-based community development and innovative strategies for evangelism and outreach in the city. \nSession 6: Integrative Ministry in the City \nUsing Col. 1:17\, we will bring these urban topics together as a coherent\, integrative model for missional leadership in the urban context. This model for urban leadership is based on the priority and centrality of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as Christians and their churches serve and witness in the city. In addition\, we will examine how the doctrine of justification and a Lutheran understanding of vocation enable Christians to live out their freedom in Christ to serve their neighbor and the world God has made. We will explore how this model for missional leadership integrates ministries across urban\, suburban and rural areas\, and how Christians are empowered by the Gospel to engage the culture around us. \nRegistration deadline: April 4\n \nRegistration\n
