DESCRIPTION:It Stands Written: The New Testament Appropriation of the Old Testament\nChrist and the apostles regularly ground their teaching upon the Word of the Lord given through Moses and the prophets. While the fulfillment of prophecy is regularly cited in the New Testament\, that is not the only dynamic. At times\, the language of Old Testament texts is significantly transformed in New Testament texts. Then\, there are allusions and echoes of Old Testament texts within the New Testament that stop short of direction quotation yet build on the prior text. DESCRIPTION:Decoding the Apocalypse: Study of the Book of Revelation\nThe title of the last book of the Bible is translated as “Revelation\,” but its original title was “Apocalypse.” This word literally means “the unveiling.” The purpose of this book of the Bible is to unveil the purposes of God in human history. For many people\, however\, it remains veiled — an obscure\, mysterious and confusing book. A reason many people do not understand the Apocalypse is that it is written in coded language that can only be interpreted by decoding its symbolism. This study will look at the most significant coded symbols of the book and the keys to their interpretation\, providing a broad sweep of the major themes and message of Revelation so participants can better understand this book of the Bible. DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to the Early Church\nMany people are unfamiliar with the early church and its contributions to what we believe\, teach and confess today. Lutherans and Protestants more generally assume that after the time of the apostles\, errors crept into church theology and teaching\, which only got worse as the years passed. Most Christians will happily skip over the early church and jump to the Reformation when the pure Gospel was rediscovered\, assuming that previous ages were in error. This neglects the fact that the Holy Spirit has a history throughout the life of His church. This also has often led the present-day church not only to repeat the errors against which the early church successfully fought but also to neglect the roots of existence\, which can help the church navigate our postmodern world. This workshop will help introduce the participants to some of the key figures and issues prevalent in the early church and will explore their relevance to the church of the 21st century. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Joel Elowsky\nProfessor of Historical Theology; Dean of Advanced Studies; Director of the Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts; Coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs; and the Frank and Valerie Fuerst Professor of Historical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Joel Elowsky is professor of Historical Theology\, dean of Advanced Studies and coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He also is the director of the Seminary’s Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts and is a researcher for the Center for Early African Christianity at the Oden House in New Haven\, Conn. He has been a faculty member at Concordia Seminary since 2014. Elowsky has cultivated relationships across the Christian spectrum as a result of his years of work with Dr. Thomas Oden and the Early Christian Commentary Series. In that work he has done great service in helping the church today appropriate its ancient heritage that served as a foundation for Reformation theology. DESCRIPTION:The Communal Shape of the Christian Life: Preaching From\, In and Toward Community in an Age of Individualism\nThere is no such thing as an individual Christian if we take seriously one Baptism by one Spirit into one body (Eph. 4:4-6). Indeed\, to believe in Jesus is to belong to the community of believers that includes all Christians of all times and places — including specific congregational members. But therein lies the problem. Many believers find themselves detached\, disconnected and alone — even if they attend worship regularly. This is a cultural problem\, too. Harvard Magazine recently addressed the more problematic “The Loneliness Pandemic” (2021)\, and The National Academy of the Sciences has begun measuring health based on a new “Social Frailty Index” (2023). These secular authorities are noticing what we\, in the church\, recognize to be a theological problem. As Concordia Seminary Professor of Systematic Theology Dr. Charles Arand put it\, we Lutherans are often “ecclesiologically challenged” (Concordia Journal\, 2008). But Lutherans also have the theological and biblical resources to rediscover our communal identity and help Christians grow closer together in faith and life. Central to this task is our preaching. In this workshop\, we will: \n\nConsider the causes\, both philosophical and practical\, of the rampant individualism infecting our culture and church.\nTake a close look at how preaching has unintentionally contributed to the problem.\nDiscuss specific ways in which our teaching and preaching can foster a more communal life in the congregation.\n\nThis workshop includes an opportunity for preachers to review and reimagine some of their recent sermons to see how they could more intentionally build community in their congregations. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Peter Nafzger\nAssociate Professor of Practical Theology and Director of Student Life at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Peter Nafzger is associate professor of Practical Theology and director of student life at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He has been a faculty member since 2016. He is a gifted theologian and speaker who manifests what is best about The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Nafzger joined the faculty here after serving as a pastor for nine years in Minnesota. While in Minnesota\, he served as a leader\, and continues to do so in planning of the LCMS Youth Gathering. DESCRIPTION:Faith Formation in a Nominally and Post-Christian World\nWhen the church speaks of “Christian formation\,” we tend to speak of a classroom setting: Sunday school\, Confirmation class\, adult instruction and Bible study. Such a perspective runs the risk of treating the Christian faith as primarily intellectual. When that happens\, the church can easily be equated with a K-12 school. Many have a mindset of\, “When I have learned everything I need to know\, then I can be done with church. Like school\, I can graduate\, move on and never return.” But the Christian faith is not something we simply learn\, regurgitate\, graduate and move on from. In this workshop\, participants will explore how narrative catechesis can be used to cultivate a love of the one true God and a desire to dwell with Him here in time: weekly in the Divine Service and daily in our respective vocations and in eternity where we “appear with Him in glory” and dwell with Him forever. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Adam Filipek\nGuest Instructor at Concordia Seminary and Adjunct Professor at Concordia University\, Saint Paul\, Minn.\nDr. Adam Filipek has served as pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidgerwood\, N.D.\, since October 2016. Meyer\nPresident Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Dale Meyer is perhaps best known as the former speaker of The Lutheran Hour and also president emeritus of Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. During those times\, he acquired a reputation as one of the best preachers and teachers within The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Meyer may be less known for his work as a researcher and scholar of the New Testament. DESCRIPTION:The Beginnings of Genesis and the Genesis of Beginnings\nThe book of Genesis is\, quite literally\, foundational for the rest of the Scriptures. Although the text is incredibly ancient\, through the words of the text\, our Lord still speaks to us today. The not-as-ancient division of the text into chapters and verses may cause the reader or listener to overlook a part of the larger-scale significance and message. A part of the beginning of the biblical book sometimes lays out or\, more figuratively\, “begets” the upcoming structure of the rest of the book in an attempt to prepare the reader or listener as to what lies ahead. Often\, the layout of the tabernacle/temple serves as a memorable progression. During this workshop\, examples of this structure of an initial layout will be given from both Testaments and various types of writing. Participants in this workshop may have the opportunity to look at possible literary beginnings in any biblical books they would like to study. \n\n\n\n\nRev. Paul Landgraf\nPastor\, Pilgrim Lutheran Church/Saint John Lutheran Church\, Chamois/Drake\, Mo.\nRev. Paul Landgraf has served the church in a variety of contexts\, from Queens\, N.Y.\, on a 1988-89 vicarage under Dr. Larry Vogel\, to rural Missouri\, since 2012\, at two congregations in the small towns of Drake and Freedom\, where the speed limit in both is 50 mph. He received a Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.\, 1998)\, and his thesis included an analysis of Martin Luther’s translation of his favorite Psalm 118. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.\, 2012) by the exam route with an exegetical major. DESCRIPTION:This workshop was originally scheduled for July 10-12\, 2023\, but has been rescheduled to Jan. 22-24\, 2024. \nMaking Christian Counseling More Christ Centered\nMany pastors and church leaders of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod realize that much of what passes for Christian counseling is based in the Law and not the Gospel of Christ. Dr. C.F.W. Walther said that properly dividing Law and Gospel in “private ministrations” is more difficult than in preaching and teaching. How can Lutheran pastors and other counselors better learn to properly distinguish Law and Gospel in counseling situations — and apply the Gospel as an antidote where needed? How can Lutheran pastors better equip the non-Lutheran Christian counselors they refer parishioners to with these critically important concepts? When should a Lutheran pastor refer a parishioner to a mental health specialist\, perhaps even a non-Christian one\, when the expertise needed falls into the “left-hand kingdom”?
