SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Elowsky in Bourbonnais\, IL
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to the Early Church\nMany people are unfamiliar with the early church and its contributions to what we believe\, teach and confess today. Lutherans and Protestants more generally assume that after the time of the apostles\, errors crept into church theology and teaching\, which only got worse as the years passed. Most Christians will happily skip over the early church and jump to the Reformation when the pure Gospel was rediscovered\, assuming that previous ages were in error. This neglects the fact that the Holy Spirit has a history throughout the life of His church. This also has often led the present-day church not only to repeat the errors against which the early church successfully fought but also to neglect the roots of existence\, which can help the church navigate our postmodern world. This workshop will help introduce the participants to some of the key figures and issues prevalent in the early church and will explore their relevance to the church of the 21st century. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Joel Elowsky\nProfessor of Historical Theology; Dean of Advanced Studies; Director of the Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts; Coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs; and the Frank and Valerie Fuerst Professor of Historical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Joel Elowsky is professor of Historical Theology\, dean of Advanced Studies and coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He also is the director of the Seminary’s Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts and is a researcher for the Center for Early African Christianity at the Oden House in New Haven\, Conn. He has been a faculty member at Concordia Seminary since 2014. Elowsky has cultivated relationships across the Christian spectrum as a result of his years of work with Dr. Thomas Oden and the Early Christian Commentary Series. In that work he has done great service in helping the church today appropriate its ancient heritage that served as a foundation for Reformation theology. His work dovetails nicely with the cutting-edge research of the history of exegesis of others at the Seminary. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 24\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 25\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 26\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: June 10\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Peter in York\, NE
DESCRIPTION:Decoding the Apocalypse: Study of the Book of Revelation\nThe title of the last book of the Bible is translated as “Revelation\,” but its original title was “Apocalypse.” This word literally means “the unveiling.” The purpose of this book of the Bible is to unveil the purposes of God in human history. For many people\, however\, it remains veiled — an obscure\, mysterious and confusing book. A reason many people do not understand the Apocalypse is that it is written in coded language that can only be interpreted by decoding its symbolism. This study will look at the most significant coded symbols of the book and the keys to their interpretation\, providing a broad sweep of the major themes and message of Revelation so participants can better understand this book of the Bible. This “unveiling” will enable you to see Christ\, His church and history (past\, present and future) in a whole new light. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Peter\nProfessor of Practical Theology\, Dean of Faculty and Alumni Relations Adviser at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Peter has led well-received lay studies on the book of Revelation and also has recently published a book on leading mid-sized congregations\, Maximizing the Midsize Church: Effective for Leadership for Fruitful Mission and Ministry (CPH). Those who know him recognize that he brings a solid theological understanding of the church to the topic as well as an openness to how we live out our Lutheran ecclesiology in the world today. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, July 8\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, July 9\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, July 10\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: June 24\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Golden in Santa Fe\, NM
DESCRIPTION:What Can Eighth Century B.C. Prophets Teach the 21st Century?\nSeparated by nearly three millennia and significant cultural differences\, the great prophets of the eighth century B.C. — Isaiah\, Micah\, Amos\, Hosea and Jonah — can seem a world apart. Yet the Spirit remains active in the word they delivered that we would be strengthened in the faith. We will consider the eighth century B.C. prophets in their original context\, compare that context to our own and apply the word of the Lord that they delivered afresh to our own day. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Golden\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology and Dean of the Theological Research and Publication at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Kevin Golden is associate professor of Exegetical Theology and dean of Theological Research and Publication at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Lessing in West Fargo\, ND
DESCRIPTION:In the Beginning: Studies in Genesis\nWho hasn’t had questions about creation\, humanity’s fall into sin\, the first promise of a Savior\, Noah’s flood\, and the entity Jacob wrestled with all night? SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Golden in Springfield\, MO
DESCRIPTION:It Stands Written: The New Testament Appropriation of the Old Testament\nChrist and the apostles regularly ground their teaching upon the Word of the Lord given through Moses and the prophets. While the fulfillment of prophecy is regularly cited in the New Testament\, that is not the only dynamic. At times\, the language of Old Testament texts is significantly transformed in New Testament texts. Then\, there are allusions and echoes of Old Testament texts within the New Testament that stop short of direction quotation yet build on the prior text. During this workshop\, participants will explore the various dynamics of the New Testament’s use of the Old Testament\, consider the Christological significance of those dynamics and reflect on how the interpretive practice can reflect those dynamics. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Golden\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology and Dean of Theological Research and Publication at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Kevin Golden is associate professor of Exegetical Theology and dean of Theological Research and Publication at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He joined the faculty in 2021. SUMMARY:Lay Bible Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Book of Psalms and the Christ\nDr. Adam Hensley\nOur Lord often quoted the Psalms and said that they testify about Him (Luke 24:27; John 5:39). In doing so\, Jesus confirmed the psalter’s prophetic witness about Himself as Israel’s coming Messiah. In this workshop we will consider how the psalter’s arrangement contributes to the Psalms’ rich picture of the Christ as Triumphant King\, Royal Son\, Suffering Servant\, Priestly Mediator and Leader of Praise to the Father. We also will explore some of the manifold ways we hear the Christ speaking in the Psalms as He identifies with sinners\, announces God’s grace to them\, and enjoins them to join Him in prayer\, praise and thanksgiving to God. \nRegister Learn More\n

SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Marrs in Dublin\, OH
DESCRIPTION:Luther’s Soul Care Theology for the 21st Century\nMany LCMS pastors and church leaders realize that much of what passes for Christian counseling is based on the Law\, not the Gospel of Christ. Dr. C.F.W. Walther\, the Concordia Seminary’s first president\, said that properly dividing Law and Gospel in “private ministrations” is more difficult than in preaching and teaching. How can Lutheran pastors and other counselors better learn to properly distinguish Law and Gospel in counseling situations — and apply the Gospel as an antidote where needed? How can Lutheran pastors better equip the non-Lutheran Christian counselors they refer parishioners to with these critically important concepts? When should a Lutheran pastor refer a parishioner to a mental health specialist\, perhaps even a non-Christian one\, when the expertise needed falls into the “left-hand kingdom”? During this workshop\, these and other complicated pastoral care questions will be addressed in hopes that the learners will become more confident and effective in their care of the souls entrusted to them. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Richard Marrs\nSenior Professor of Practical Theology\nDr. Rick Marrs is senior professor of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\, and has been at the forefront of his field when it comes to confronting the assumptions of and approaches of secular counselors. He has worked to bring a Christocentric\, Law-Gospel approach to counseling among evangelicals. He was a professor of psychology and a counselor at St. John’s College in Winfield\, Kan. (1983–86; admissions counselor 1982–83)\, and at Concordia University Chicago\, River Forest\, Ill. (1986–98). He also has done counseling\, clinical and consulting work with Lutheran Child and Family Services; the Baldwin Center for Psychological Services; the Center for Applied Psychology and Forensic Studies; the Kansas State University counseling center; Rapha (a Christian inpatient psychiatric group); Concordia University\, Ann Arbor\, Mich.; Lutheran Special Education Ministries; and various districts of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). He has been licensed as a psychologist since 1996. In 2019\, Marrs published the book Making Christian Counseling More Christ Centered\, which focuses on the relevance of Martin Luther’s soul-care theology in Christian counseling (WestBow Press). \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, Aug. 5\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, Aug. 6\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, Aug. 7\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: July 22\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev.
