The role of suffering in the life of the believer,

The role of suffering in the life of the believer, and the ensuing crisis of faith and ministry that can follow, is the focus of Concordia Seminary’s Aug. 7 Lay Bible Institute, “When Things Fall Apart: Job’s Frightening Journey,” led by Dr. Henry Rowold, professor emeritus of Practical Theology.

During this intensive study of the book of Job, Rowold will help participants examine the dialogue of Job and his friends, and the attempts of people, those suffering and those ministering, to make sense of the difficulties. Participants will explore the conversation between God and Job and the resolution of faith that emerges.

Open to anyone interested in the proclamation of the Gospel, the one-day workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug.7 in Sieck Hall 202 on campus, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis, MO 63105. Registration deadline is July 23. Cost is $20 per person.

The Lay Bible Institute, offered three times a year by Concordia Seminary faculty members, is an ongoing study of the Bible and how it relates to today’s life and events.

"St. Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus who sold some land and gave the proceeds to the early Christian community in Jerusalem (Acts 4:36-37). St. Paul informs us that he was a cousin of John Mark (Col. 4:10). Barnabas was sent by the Jerusalem Church to oversee the young Church in Antioch (Acts 11:22). While there, he went to Tarsus and brought Paul back to Antioch to help him (Acts 11:25-26). It was this Church in Antioch that commissioned and sent Barnabas and Paul on the first missionary journey (Acts 13:2-3)." (Treasury of Daily Prayer)

Richard H. Warneck, professor emeritus of Concordi

Richard H. Warneck, professor emeritus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, entered eternal rest in Jesus Tuesday, June 8. He was 85 years old.

Visitation is set for 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois Road, Affton, Mo., and 10-11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at Church of the Reformation, 7910 MacKenzie Road, Affton, Mo., immediately followed by a service at 11 a.m.

“As a student years ago, I loved and appreciated Richard Warneck as a teacher and a source of pastoral wisdom,” said Seminary President Dr. Thomas J. Egger. “Later, serving with him on the Seminary faculty, his earnestness for the welfare of the church was always evident, and his genuine, self-effacing humility gained the respect of all. Today, as we mourn with the Warneck family, we also look forward to the day of resurrection, when the Lord Jesus will say to Dick: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your master.’”

The Concordia Deaconess Conference held their annu

The Concordia Deaconess Conference held their annual conference this week. Salem Lutheran Church - Affton, MO hosted the St. Louis area satellite location for the virtual event. Several alumnae of the Concordia Seminary deaconess program were in attendance, as well as a current deaconess student and Seminary staff members Deaconess Dr. Gillian bond, current director of the CSL deaconess programs, and Deaconess Rebekah Lukas, communications specialist. On Wednesday, the group was joined during their luncheon banquet by Concordia Seminary President Dr. Thomas J. Egger, Synod President Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, and other guests from the International Center, Rev. Dr. James Baneck and Rev. Robert Zagore. What a blessing this conference and gathering was for the LCMS deaconesses serving Christ and His church throughout the world!
