Summer Workshop: Professor Schmitt in Huntsville, Texas

Description
Preaching and the Arts
During this workshop, pastors will consider how they can integrate the arts into preaching. In particular, the workshop will consider how to integrate the church’s hymnody and visual arts into preaching. Participants will learn specific techniques for working with poetic language and visual images in preaching both at the developmental and structural levels of sermon design.
Dr. David Schmitt
Schmitt is the Gregg H. Benidt Memorial Professor of Homiletics and Literature. He is without doubt one of our church’s brightest thinkers in the area of homiletics and devotional studies today. He is extremely helpful as one who is able to engage the intersections of faith and culture, especially literary culture and more recently, the visual arts. Most importantly, he does so by drawing upon our confessional Lutheran tradition. He currently has two books in the works, The Pilgrimage of Preaching, a homiletics text on the art of preaching, and Restoration Spiritualities, a literary study on late 17th century faith and literary culture.
