If you see yourself as marginal, an outsider, a sinner, or an unlikely candidate to come to seminary and study to become a pastor or deaconess, this episode is for you.

In "Unlikely Candidates to Follow Jesus with Leo Sánchez," Dr. Benjamin Haupt and Rev. Micah Glenn are joined by Dr. Leopoldo Sánchez, Director of Concordia Seminary's Center for Hispanic Studies and the Werner R.H. Krause and Elizabeth Ringger Krause Professor of Hispanic Ministries and Systematic Theology. They discuss Matt. 9:9-13 and Jesus' calling of Matthew, an unlikely candidate to be a disciple. Born in Chile and raised in Panama, Dr. Sánchez tells his own story of how he grew up among Roman Catholics and Pentecostals and ended up being confirmed as a Lutheran and then went on to study to become a pastor.

"Under the Fig Tree" posts new episodes every Friday. Stream anytime on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts!

"Is life basically tragic? Is it only blood, sweat "Is life basically tragic? Is it only blood, sweat, and tears? Because I believe that Christ has redeemed me and all creatures, I say “No.” Because I believe that Christ rose again from the dead, I say “No.” Because I believe that I too shall rise from death and live eternally with my risen Lord (as our text this morning reminds us), I say, “No, life is not basically tragic. It is not only blood, sweat, and tears.”"

Professor Emeritus Francis “Rev” Rossow preached the Easter sermon "What's Wrong with Happy Endings?" in the Concordia Seminary chapel on April 15, 1977. It was later published in the July 1977 issue of the Concordia Journal (volume 3, issue 4). Read it now on the Concordia Theology blog and on our Facebook page, @ConcordiaSem.
In the next Word and Work: An Intersection, "Why R In the next Word and Work: An Intersection, "Why Read Rare Books?" President Emeritus Dr. Dale A. Meyer talks with Dr. Bruce Durazzi, the special collections librarian in the Seminary's Kristine Kay Hasse Memorial Library. They talk about the library’s many resources including its rare book collection of 8,000 volumes, one of which is J.S. Bach’s personal Bible. Durazzi tells the story of how the Bach Bible ended up at the Seminary and shares a few details about some historic books, including one on a Martin Luther sermon printed in Wittenberg, Germany, in the 1500s. Durazzi says the book’s printing, most likely, was overseen by Luther himself. “We are Lutheran leaven because these kinds of scholarship and resources get out into the broader Christian community on behalf of the Gospel,” Meyer says. This morning, the Seminary community gathered for This morning, the Seminary community gathered for the Easter Divine Service for chapel. The service began with a powerful rendition of “Were You There,” sung by Laudamus, a select choir of seminarians directed by Dr. James Marriott, director of Music Arts. Associate Provost Dr. Benjamin Haupt gave the homily, focusing on John 20, reminding the Seminary community of the restoration, peace and new life that is freely given to us from our risen Savior.

“Awake, my heart with gladness, See what today is done / Now after gloom and sadness, Comes forth the glorious sun. / My Savior there was laid / Where our bed must be made / When to the realms of light / Our spirit wings its flight.” (LSB, 467)
