SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Elowsky in Bourbonnais\, IL
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to the Early Church\nMany people are unfamiliar with the early church and its contributions to what we believe\, teach and confess today. Lutherans and Protestants more generally assume that after the time of the apostles\, errors crept into church theology and teaching\, which only got worse as the years passed. Most Christians will happily skip over the early church and jump to the Reformation when the pure Gospel was rediscovered\, assuming that previous ages were in error. This neglects the fact that the Holy Spirit has a history throughout the life of His church. This also has often led the present-day church not only to repeat the errors against which the early church successfully fought but also to neglect the roots of existence\, which can help the church navigate our postmodern world. This workshop will help introduce the participants to some of the key figures and issues prevalent in the early church and will explore their relevance to the church of the 21st century. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Joel Elowsky\nProfessor of Historical Theology; Dean of Advanced Studies; Director of the Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts; Coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs; and the Frank and Valerie Fuerst Professor of Historical Theology at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. Joel Elowsky is professor of Historical Theology\, dean of Advanced Studies and coordinator of International Seminary Exchange Programs at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis. He also is the director of the Seminary’s Center for the Study of Early Christian Texts and is a researcher for the Center for Early African Christianity at the Oden House in New Haven\, Conn. He has been a faculty member at Concordia Seminary since 2014. Elowsky has cultivated relationships across the Christian spectrum as a result of his years of work with Dr. Thomas Oden and the Early Christian Commentary Series. In that work he has done great service in helping the church today appropriate its ancient heritage that served as a foundation for Reformation theology. His work dovetails nicely with the cutting-edge research of the history of exegesis of others at the Seminary. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 24\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 25\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 26\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $150\n	Registration deadline: June 10\, 2024\n	Location contact: Rev. SUMMARY:Prof Insights: Faculty-Led Workshop – Professor Adams in Bourbonnais\, IL
DESCRIPTION:The Present God: Exploring a Major Biblical Theme\nFor many Christians\, the theological value of the Old Testament is limited to messianic prophecies and the comforting assurances of the Psalms. Such a perspective runs the risk of impoverishing our teaching and preaching by failing to recognize the foundational role of the Old Testament for the Christian faith and the rich variety of ways in which its theology is communicated. In this presentation\, Dr. David Adams will explore one major theological motif\, the presence of God\, and show how it shapes the faith in the Old Testament and the fulfillment of that faith in the person and ministry of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Adams\nProfessor of Exegetical Theology and the W.G. Ray and Louis J. Rechtzigel Professor of Biblical Studies at Concordia Seminary\, St. Louis\nDr. David Adams joined the faculty of Concordia Seminary in 2000. During the past 23 years\, he has brought to the classroom wide-ranging interests from philosophy to archaeology. He wrote the study notes for the Psalms and Old Testament wisdom literature in the ESV Archaeology Study Bible (Crossway\, 2018) and was centrally involved in the 2007 archaeological dig at Khirbet Qeiyafa from which an inscription was unearthed that provides historical evidence for the existence of King David and the united monarchy. He is best known for his work on the Old Testament and has been devoting much of his time to thinking through a Lutheran theology of the Old Testament with a special focus on the presence of God. Adams loves to talk theology at the drop of a hat and does so in a way that his conversation partner always leaves enriched in ways that start one thinking in new ways. \n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nDAY\nTIME\n\n\nMonday\, June 19\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nTuesday\, June 20\n9-11:30 a.m.\n\n\n\n1-4 p.m.\n\n\nWednesday\, June 21\n9 a.m.-noon\n\n\n\n\n	Registration cost: $140\n	Registration deadline: June 5\, 2023\n	Location contact: Roger Drinnon\n	 \n	Register\n Promo Video\n	More Workshops\n\n\nNote: The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the workshop presenters. \n\n
