Concordia Seminary, St. Louis has added four new members to its Board of Regents (BOR) [1] during recent elections and appointments. Three additional members, who had been appointed earlier, also were elected.
New members include the following:
- Rev. Peter Lange, first vice president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) in St. Louis, Mo., appointed by LCMS President Dr. Matthew C. Harrison to a three-year term
- Michael Staub, director of Instrumental Music and Music Education and assistant professor of music at Concordia University Texas, Austin, elected during the 67th Regular Convention of the LCMS, to a six-year term
- Dr. John Lang, retired director of pharmaceutical development for EnDev Laboratories in Kannapolis, N.C., appointed by Board of Regents members to fill a vacant seat, whose term ends in 2025
- Rev. Tyler Arnold, senior pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Platte Woods, Mo., appointed by the LCMS Board of Directors to fill the remainder of the elected term of Dr. Harold Senkbeil, whose term ends in 2022
Returning members include:
- Mark Stern, attorney with Witt Law in Barrington, Ill., elected during the LCMS convention to a six-year term, previously appointed by the Board of Regents
- Rev. Todd Peperkorn, pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Rocklin, Calif., elected during the LCMS convention to a six-year term
- Rev. Bruce E. Keseman, pastor of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Freeburg, Ill., elected during the LCMS convention to a six-year term
In 2018, the Synod’s Board of Directors appointed Peperkorn and Keseman to the Seminary’s Board of Regents when two convention-elected regents resigned — Rev. Ulmer Marshall and Rev. Shawn Kumm.
“The composition and character of the Board of Regents changes from triennium to triennium,” said Seminary President Dr. Dale A. Meyer. “After 15 years of working with our ever-changing board, I believe the most important qualities regents can demonstrate to the Synod and Seminary are a collegial spirit, a quest to learn how our blessed institution can best apply faithful theology to today’s cultures, and be very publicly supportive of the programs and personnel of Concordia Seminary. I do believe that our new board can demonstrate these qualities for the sake of our Lord’s mission.”
According to the LCMS Bylaws, the Seminary’s Board of Regents may have up to 13 members, which includes three ordained members, one commissioned member and three lay members, all elected by the Synod in convention; one Synod vice president appointed by the LCMS president; one district president selected by the LCMS Council of Presidents; and up to four members who have been appointed by the board itself. The president of the LCMS Missouri District also serves as an advisory member.
