Leading with Confidence in Congregations: Principles of Faithful Financial Management

This session provides a practical, plain-language overview of financial leadership for pastors and congregational leaders in managing God’s resources for His mission. It will address topics like budgeting principles and financial statements and engage a Practical Theological Framework. Designed for participants without formal financial training, the session focuses on understanding what the numbers mean, identifying trends and risks and using financial information to support informed strategic conversations and leadership in ministry.

Dr. Mart Thompson

Associate Professor of Practical Theology, and Director of Specific Ministry Pastor Program

Dr. W. Mart Thompson is associate professor of Practical Theology and director of Specific Ministry Program (SMP) at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. As an associate professor, Thompson’s areas of experience and expertise include pastoral theology, catechesis, new member incorporation, small group spiritual care, and youth and family discipleship. As director of the SMP program, he oversees all aspects of this ministry formation program at Concordia Seminary and provides synod-wide support to The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) leaders in the application of the program.

Deaconess Dr. Kim Schave

Director of Graduate Programs, Assistant Professor of Accounting, Batterman School of Business, Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, Wi.

Dr. Kim Schave is a certified public accountant who has also served as a nonprofit leader and Lutheran Deaconess. She has more than 20 years of experience teaching college accounting and business courses. She brings extensive expertise in management, finance and accounting, development, grant writing and volunteer leadership, with professional experience spanning for-profit and nonprofit organizations as well as higher education. Dr. Schave also served as a military police officer in the Ohio Army National Guard. She holds a Ph.D. in organizational leadership (business management concentration) from Eastern University, a master’s in Theology with Deaconess certification from Concordia Theological Seminary, a certificate in Business Management for Nonprofit Leaders from Washington University, and a BBA in accounting from the University of Cincinnati.
