Seventh Season of "Bach at the Sem" Begins November 22

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis is pleased to announce the seventh season of “Bach at the Sem,” featuring presentations of J.S. Bach’s music by the American Kantorei under the direction of Robert Bergt. The sacred concerts and worship services that comprise the “Bach at the Sem” series take place in The Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus on the Seminary campus on Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. There is no admission charge and no tickets are issued.

The theme for this season, God’s Time Is Always Best: He Is the Eternal Fire and Fountain of Love (based on Cantatas 34 and 106, January 24 performance), coincides with the imminent change in centuries to come. Conductor Bergt has planned two years of Bach’s literature which emphasize “time.”

The dates and works for the 1998-99 season of “Bach at the Sem” are as follows:

November 22, 1998: “The End Time” – Cantatas 140 & 31; Cantata 70 (excerpts)
December 6, 1998: “The Fullness of Time” – Cantatas 36 & 62
January 24, 1999: “God’s Time” – Cantatas 106 & 34
February 7, 1999: “Past Time” – Plainsong Chant Melodies in Bach’s Music; Bach Organ Recital; Hymns Sung by the People
March 14, 1999: “Present Time” – Motets 3 & 4; Cantata 4

A special feature of this year’s series will take place on Jan. 24, 1999 as Walter E. Buszin, professor of church music, hymnody and liturgy at Concordia Seminary for many years, is remembered. A special lecture will be offered at 6:00 p.m. in the student chapel (located in the lower level of the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus) on the Seminary campus. The lecture, delivered by Dr. Kirby Koriath, is offered free of charge and will emphasize Buszin’s views concerning church music and liturgy.

“Bach at the Sem” is made possible through generous gifts by Richard and Phyllis Duesenberg of St. Louis and to Robert and Lori Duesenberg of Oakton, Virginia.
