Concordia Seminary to Host Fourth Annual Lecture In Hispanic/Latino Theology and Missions

The Center for Hispanic Studies (CHS) at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, will host its fourth Annual Lecture in Hispanic/Latino Theology and Missions, to be held Tuesday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. in the Seminary’s Clara and Spencer Werner Auditorium. Dr. Efraín Agosto, dean and professor of New Testament, and director of the Program for Hispanic Ministries at Hartford Seminary, Hartford, Conn., will be the guest speaker.

The theme for this year’s lecture is “Leadership in Paul.” This is one of Dr. Agosto’s areas of research, as well as a timely topic in light of Pope Benedict XVI’s declaration of this year as the “Year of St. Paul” in celebration of the 2000th anniversary of the apostle’s birth.

The annual lecture is designed to raise awareness about issues that affect Latino communities and to highlight the contributions of Latinos and others to the shape of the church’s task in such contexts. Admission is free and the lecture will be delivered in English.

Prior to the lecture, CHS will host a Latino Movie Night (Noche de Cinema) on Monday, March 30, at 7:00 p.m. in Werner Auditorium. The featured film is “The Wild Bunch,” and Dr. David Lewis, assistant professor of exegetical theology, will facilitate discussion afterwards pertaining to “Christ,” “redemption” and “leadership” themes, as well as the portrayal of Latinos, in this classic Western film.

A Spanish worship service will conclude the events on Wednesday, April 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the undercroft room of The Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus. Rev. Héctor Hoppe, senior editor and director of Editorial Concordia at Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis,Mo., will preach. The service will include the participation of CHS Seminary students.

The public is invited to attend all CHS events. Dr. Leopoldo Sánchez M., assistant professor of systematic theology and the Werner R.H. Krause and Elizabeth Ringger Krause Endowed Chair for Hispanic Ministries, is the director for the Center for Hispanic Studies.
