‘These Stones Will Shout’ biblical archaeology lecture set for Sept. 9

Dr. Yosef Garfinkel to present ‘Judah in the Time of David’

Stones will shout

The second annual “These Stones Will Shout” Lecture in Biblical Archaeology will explore the rich intersection of Scripture, history and archaeology at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, in Werner Auditorium on the campus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.

This year’s lecture, titled “Judah in the Time of David,” will be presented by Dr. Yosef Garfinkel, the Yigael Yadin Professor of Archaeology of the Land of Israel at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Institute of Archaeology.

Garfinkel will delve into the archaeological and historical evidence surrounding the emergence of the Kingdom of Judah, shedding new light on the era of David and Solomon.

“Over the past 40 years, scholars have debated the historicity of the Old Testament narratives that recount the events of the 10th century B.C. Some have taken a minimalist approach that would treat David and Solomon and others as little more than legendary figures,” said Dr. Kevin Golden, dean of Theological Research and Publication. “For over a decade Dr. Yosef Garfinkel has been excavating 10th century B.C. Judean sites. His archaeological work reveals that Judah had fortified cities, administration and writing in the time of David and Solomon in accord with the biblical record. Those attending Dr. Garfinkel’s lecture will be fortified in the historical reliability of the biblical narrative relating to David and Solomon.”

The lecture is made possible through the generosity of Tom and Linda Ray, whose archaeological experiences in Greece and Israel inspired their desire to bring deeper awareness of biblical archaeology to the Seminary and broader community. The Rays also established the W.G. Ray and Louis J. Rechtzigel Endowed Chair of Biblical Studies at the Seminary in 2021.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Continuing Education at 314-505-7286 or [email protected].
